Bio:

Slytherin's Shame

Name: Merope Gaunt
Age/Birthday: May 31, 1907
House/Year: Not available
Year they were living in: 1923
Location: Little Hangleton.
Blood: Direct line of Salazar Slytherin.
Wand: 9", Purple Heart wood, unicorn hair.
Alignment (Order, DE, Neutral?): Her family supported Grindelwald and thus she supports Dark Wizardry publicly. However, in secret, she is extremely neutral. Merope was always used to her father and brother doing dark magic and supporting it, so she was forced to support it.
Cunning and Ambition

Weaknesses: Merope has more weaknesses than strengths. She cannot perform magic whenever she is upset or nervous, she has problems speaking in public, and she has issues with speaking up. Merope does not take care of her well-being; if she is ill, has a problem, or otherwise, she is unlikely to even utter a word or complain. Because Merope was heavily abused by her family, she became unable to perform proper magic in front of them. She became very used to her way of living in silence and never complained about anything. She is the ultimate passive person, she just doesn't react to any sort of fighting. She allows herself to be pushed and whatever else, because she fears that saying "no" will do nothing to help her.

Strengths: Contrary to what many people believe, Merope is a rather talented witch. She is very skilled in the Dark Arts and Potions. In addition, Merope has strong household skills like cooking and sewing. Merope is also intelligent, though most see her as the exact opposite. Merope would be considered something like Narcissa, but worse. She was a "at-home-witch", usually treated poorly in the ways similar to a house-elf. She did everything for her family that required actual labor, as wells as non-labor magic. She spent most of her nights self-teaching herself through Marvolo's school books and practicing magic on her own.

Appearance:
Merope is very thin and sickly looking. Standing at at 5'3", she has long black, unevenly cut hair and prominent, medium green-coloured eyes. She can be considered unattractive due to her thin build, dirty clothing, and generally unhappy disposition. Her gently carved features have never seen a smile. She is usually found wearing long, dark dresses that tend to be ratty and frayed at the bottom from wearing them for such long periods of time.

Merope also appears to constantly have a "defeated" look.

Friendships and Relationships: She has a very unhealthy obsession with Tom Riddle and absolutely no friends.
Sexual orientation: Straight. She was in love with Tom Riddle.
Family: Marvolo Gaunt, Medusa Gaunt and Morfin Gaunt.

Choose the side you want to be on.

History:
There was a time when Salazar Slytherin's line came down to a family of three, the Gaunts, a family that proudly threw away their money along the generations, until it came down to them struggling to survive on whatever they could grow in their gardens. Marvolo, reluctantly following in his father's footsteps, married his own first cousin. Her name was Medusa Gaunt and she was just as horrid looking as one would think, but they didn't care.

After several years of marriage, Medusa gave birth to Morfin Gaunt. Five years later, Merope Gaunt was born, and with her arrival came the unfortunate death of Medusa during childbirth. That was when Merope's life began to go downhill. From that moment on, Merope was always considered a bad child by her father, and constantly whipped and abused. Merope quickly learned that if she stayed obedient and submissive, the rest of her family would leave her alone. However, that didn't last very long and she seemed to live a tortured life for a good long time.

Merope lived that way, under her family's harsh thumb, for several years. It started to change when she turned fourteen.

Merope was fifteen when she received the gold chained locket. It was a birthday present. At least, her father seemed to think it was her birthday – each year it seemed to be a different day, sometimes even a different month.

She woke from the crate in the corner of the room to see Marvolo looking down at her. She flinched involuntarily, her muscles remembering the times her father had come home in a drunken rage and kicked her into the wall, mumbling things about his dead wife. This time, however, he sat beside her, tenderly drew out a package of brown paper and handed it to her.

She had never received a birthday present before, and so half expected it to contain some nastiness that would burn her, but was too afraid to refuse to open it. Fingers trembling, she undid the grubby string that kept it all together and carefully pulled the paper away, revealing the locket. She looked up at her father in puzzlement. He smiled encouragingly back, so she touched it, somwhat gingerly.

It was cold metal, nothing more, and as soon as she knew this Merope suddenly saw how beautiful it was. She stroked its metallic surface, smiling.

Her father reached to her hands and gently opened the locket, and Merope saw the engraved snake symbol inside.

“Slytherin’s.” Marvolo said quietly. “I’m trusting you with this. I hope you won’t let me down.”

Merope nodded, hardly believing that her father trusted her with such a beautiful and precious thing. “Thankyou.” she whispered in Parseltongue. “I will not let you down.”

She loved the locket more that anything and wore it around her neck all the time. Sometimes when her father and brother were out of the house she would stand in front of the cracked mirror, comb her dirty, unevenly cut hair from her face and admire her reflection. She could be almost beautiful, she thought, the beautiful heir of Slytherin, with the precious locket to prove it. She could stand for almost an hour, gazing at her reflection before she heard her father or brother coming up the path, and had to lurch away, quickly tucking the locket back inside her clothes and getting into position at the stove as if she had been doing nothing else.

Her father was searching for a suitable husband for her. Of course, there was no question of it being anyone with any – she shuddered at the very thought – Muggle blood. Marvolo had been trying to meet with Sirius Black to discuss the possible marriage of his son Arcturus, who was several years older, to Merope. However, there was a problem and it didn't happen. Sirius and Marvolo had a fight amongst themselves and it ended with Marvolo telling Sirius that he was a "mudblood lover". Marvolo broke the news to Merope shortly after and then started on a new idea.

“As you both know, the continuation of our exquisite bloodline is more important than anything. I’ve decided you will marry each other.” This made Merope sick to her stomach and nothing else he said after that moment mattered. She would never have admitted it to Marvolo or Mofin, but she had been hoping on the marriage to Arcturus Black with all her heart. She had been wishing on every star, had been praying to her locket in the hope that Slytherin would hear her and answer her prayers. She had never met Rigel, but had heard that the house of Black was full of finery and beauty. That they had house elves to do their every whim, that they slept in huge, soft beds with velvet covers. She had been dreaming of being Merope Black, of leaving the hovel where she lived. But it seemed that she would never leave.

The relationship between Morfin and Merope was incestual and sickly. Morfin, after a while of denial, decided that Merope was his and would try various things on her. These things never went farther than kissing or just wanting to rub her, Morfin was usually less violent when she allowed him to do these things. This is what started Merope's passive-aggressive attitude towards her family.

Merope stopped caring about where her life would go, it seemed so bleak anyways. She would do odd things like put ingredients to make them sick in the food she cooked if they treated her badly. She would also take Marvolo and Morfin's things and hide them or bury them away. Merope, of course, would get in trouble and be blamed for these things but they never had prove of it.

This life of living in a two room shack with her father and brother seemed to be it for Merope, at least, until she first laid eyes on Tom Riddle, a Muggle from Great Hangleton. She was nearly ten when she first saw him, and the two of them were friends. It was then that Merope fell deeply in love with him. Eventually, Marvolo, whom greatly despised Muggles, intervened, saying awful things about the Riddle boy, but no matter the lies her father told her, Merope still loved Tom.

Shortly after Merope had turned seventeen, she learned that Morfin had severely hexed Tom Riddle. Of course, as always, crimes do not go unpunished and Morfin was sentenced to a stint at Azkaban prison. Morfin's father Marvolo was also sent to Azkaban for assaulting Ministry of Magic officials and resisting arrest. Following her family member's arrests, Merope, now alone in the house, was able to live as she pleased in a fantasy world where Tom Riddle would always love her. It only took her a month of planning to come up with a ideal plan that would force Tom to love her; as Tom rode by on his horse parched with thirst, Merope gave him Amortentia-laced water.

As long as she gave Tom Amortentia once a week, Merope's life was a dream come true. She was finally with the man she loved. Shortly after becoming pregnant, which was about a year after they married, Merope decided to let the potion wear off in the belief that, after being with him for so long, Tom would love her back. In fact, Tom Riddle did no such thing and left her. Merope was devastated and could hardly perform magic anymore. She spent the next few months wandering around hopeless and demoralized, and finally got the courage to sell her treasured locket at Borgin and Burke's, a relic of Salazar Slytherin's himself. The locket, though far from being worthless, gave her very little money because the buyer Burke knew just how desperate the poor Merope was and unknown of its value.

After several more months, her life would end, ironically, giving birth to her son. She was in labor when she arrived at an orphanage and died after having spent only one small hour with the boy she named after "He-Who-Left-Her."

Personality: Merope is silent, reserved and always submissive. She has never once raised a hand to anyone in her whole life. This world was everyone else's and Merope just lived in it, with no one paying her mind or thought. Merope is painfully shy and unsociable, not to mention afraid of most people around her. She is also very clumsy, especially when near her family or people that make her nervous. She speaks so little that some people would be inclined to think her completely mute, but that is not the case.

However, when Merope is by herself, she is almost like an entirely different person. She can be passive-aggressive, angry and even manipulative. Only when she becomes extremely upset is she likely to act this way. There isn't really much else about her, other than the fact she has some amazing bravery, especially for one who seems to have no trace of it at all.
